During the hiking trip to Swedish Lapland, we have the opportunity to get acquainted with the Sami culture in the town of Nikkaulokta. It is a very small and authentic locality that we visited at the end of the last stage of the Kungsleden.

The most curious thing about Nikkaulokta is to see how different the buildings are, which are very prepared to withstand extreme temperatures in the Arctic Circle and whose ornamentation is related to nature. It is much easier to see the Lappish flag than that of Sweden in those places.

As for the people, you can imagine that they have little to do with the features of the Sami faces with the Scandinavians. These differences are what enrich a country like Sweden and make this trip of hiking to Lapland more attractive.

As we have already explained, the Sami or Lapon people are made up of about 80,000 people, although there are no official statistics on their population. It is estimated that about 50,000 live in Norway, 20,000 in Sweden, 10,000 in Finland and 2,000 in Russia. Lapps are now considered as the aboriginal population of Scandinavia and claim their rights as an indigenous people.

In addition to mixing with the Sami in Nikkaulokta, we can visit a very curious Protestant church, as it is a mixture of Sami and religious architecture.

As for the gastronomy of the area, in the restaurant of Nikkaulokta, you can taste a buffet based on meat and fish with a unique and tasty sauce. Reindeer and herring can not miss on this diet.

Moreover, besides knowing the Sami culture in Nikkaulokta, being located in the Arctic Circle, we have many possibilities to see the aurora borealis. The perfect colophon to Kungsleden, a hiking trip to Swedish Lapland.
