This Thursday we bring you a very interesting chapter of The health of the adventurer. This section counts on the signature of the professionals of Activa Mente, specialists in exercise for the health. Today we will talk about a very typical complement of hiking, walking sticks. Let us see their importance and if it is necessary to take them.

Walking with canes (2, 1 or none)

In many occasions when we go to walk we find people carrying two canes, or even ourselves from time to time we carry some.

Historically there has been the figure of the pilgrim, as a person who was continually walking, represented with a stick in his hand. Although it may seem that their usefulness was of protection of physical integrity, were they used only to scare off wild animals or to defend themselves against bandits, who could attack them on lonely roads, or was it for something else?

The fact that one, two or none are used has its advantages and disadvantages. This is what we want to expose you through these lines in case you have to decide later what to do.

The function of the rods nowadays has to do more with the phase of support and momentum in the march or stopped, than as a means of defense.

The effects that are obtained with its use are:

1.- The loads are distributed over more areas

Walking without more support than the feet, implies that these together with the rest of the lower limb make the greatest effort, although, as we have told you other times, it is the whole body that is involved.

If we use one or two rods in a coordinated way through the passages, the load is distributed to a greater extent with the upper extremity and column, aiding the damping and the impulse. That is why, in case we do not move for a long time and want to go walking in the mountains, it would be less aggressive for the body if we started doing it with walking sticks.

So walking with canes is suitable for: people with weakness, discomfort, lower limb injuries that need to avoid overloads in those areas.

Not suitable for: people who want to train, seek performance adaptations in the lower extremity.

2.- Increases caloric expenditure

The use of the sticks with the arms and hold / move them while walking, produces a more intense work in certain areas of the upper extremity and column. At the same speed, compared to not carrying them, that added load will cause more energy to be expended and an increase in the heart rate during movement.

That’s why it is suitable for: People who want to increase their caloric expenditure or to do a more intense exercise.

Not suitable for: People who need to spend as little energy as possible or need to walk with as much involvement and efficiency as possible in the joints / muscles of the lower limb.

3.- The base of support is improved

As you know, walking is an activity that, although it seems very simple, involves very complex operations to maintain the right balance in each moment.

When standing or during the movement, the canes cause the body to have to use less resources to stay balanced because with the support of these we have a greater base of support.

That’s why it is suitable for: People who need to feel safer walking or who get tired of standing.

It is not suitable for: Abusing them for this purpose, unless it is an irreversible situation, since depending on something external for a long time can cause the body to lose capacities to do it on its own.

4.- Speed and gait speed is improved

The technique of using these implements (of which we will speak another day) makes that, together with the passage of the march, a greater total impulse is produced by the help of the arms and, since it does not require that the lower extremity make so much effort, it has a faster pace of march.

That’s why it is suitable for: People looking for greater speed on the go without so much effort on their legs.

Not suitable for: people looking for a relaxed ride without hurry (in this case the rods would be a burden).
