We are already in the second half of 2011 and we still have no reference year to the international year of forests. With this initiative, the UN has wanted to make society aware of the importance they have for all these vital spaces and also to denounce deforestation.
To help in this task that corresponds to all of us, we want to contribute some curious data about forests:
• Forests cover 31% of the total land area.
• Forests are home to 80% of terrestrial biodiversity.
• Primary forests represent 36% of the forest area.
• Forests are home to 300 million people worldwide.
• The livelihoods of over 1.6 million people depend on forests.
• 30% of the forests are used for the production of wood and nomadic products.
• Trade of forest products was estimated at $ 327 billion in 2004.
As you know, to join this international year of forests we have made an effort and created the Tree Lovers Project. It is an initiative in which we will plant trees to compensate the CO2 emitted in because of our trips.
Soon we will provide more information, but we ask that you to reserve in your agendas and write in your calendars the weekend of November 5 and 6 when we are going to Extremadura to plant trees.
Meanwhile, I hope you will enjoy this magnificent video created especially for the International Year of Forests.
