Transylvania, with its name coming from Latin - ultra silvam (beyond the forest) - is one of the most interesting and surprising regions of Romania. The Transylvanian plateau is surrounded by the Carpathians Mountains. The Carpathians change direction in the Brasov area, where the Eastern Carpathians bend to West turning into the Southern Carpathians.
Our snowshoeing tour will be run in this remote area belonging to Carpathians’ Bend (Ciucas and Grohotis mountains).
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Bucharest, Romania (on Otopeni International Airport or Baneasa International Airport, depending of flights). Transfer by minibus to Sacele, at about 17 km from the city of Brasov, where our accommodations are located. After check-in we have dinner and time for chatting.
Day 2
After breakfast, there is a short introduction on snowshoeing, just to let you becoming familiar with the snowshoes. After that, we do a short tour and climb Piscul Dracului - The Devil’s Peak (1040 m) - where we take a look around to identify the routes that we’ll walk during the next few days. We come back to the hotel just in time for lunch. Walking time: 3-4 hours. In the afternoon, we drive to Brasov city where we walk around the medieval historical center. Dinner is served at our hotel.
Day 3
Today we climb Santuri-Rentea ridgeline, which stands firm right in the front of our pension. Hopefully, on route we’ll find some deer tracks. The prize of the day will be Rentea Peak (1378m). From here we descend directly on Doftana Valley to arrive at our hotel just in time for lunch. Walking time: 5 hours. In the afternoon, we can drive to Sacele to visit its Ethnographic Museum, recognized as one of the most beautiful in Romania (optional).
Day 4
This morning we increase the difficulty of our route by walking on Plaiul Batrana. Once we arrive to the open alpine area, we take our time to admire Tarlungeni Dam and all surrounding areas. After about two hours of walking we start the descent to Doftana valley. On route, we can make a short stop to visit Bradet Orthodox Monastery. Once at our hotel, we enjoy a hot shower and a tasty lunch. Walking time: 5 hours.
Day 5
Today we don’t climb the mountains. After breakfast we drive to Bran village, known worldwide as Dracula's castle. We have lunch in the village before leaving to the new destination: Rasnov medieval fortress. At the end of the day we’ll drive back to our hotel for a well deserved dinner.
Day 6
We drive south, through the Bratocea pass. We climb up to the Ciucas mountain hut. From this point we have the opportunity to admire the incredible stone shapes. Walking time: 5 hours.
Day 7
We ascend to the Tesla Glade. Here, we take a look around and we’ll try to identify the routes that we already walked. Walking time: 4 hours. At the hotel we’ll celebrate our success in pure Romanian style with a barbecue, traditional "palinca", and one or more glasses of red wine.
