In the extreme north of Sweden, 200 kilometers inside the Arctic Circle, hides the last remote wilderness in Western Europe. This is Lapland, and through it runs Kungsleden, the "King's Trail", along an expansive landscape of birch forests, hidden glaciers, powerful rivers, and the highest mountains in Sweden.

Our week-long hike takes us to the Kebnekaise range, which includes Sweden's highest peak, Mount Kebne (2,111 meters). These mountains are part of the Caledonian folding system that forms the backbone of Scandinavia. Most of the trek is done along a flat trail with a good path throughout. Carrying light backpacks, we overnight at a series of comfortable mountain huts, some of which have saunas to help soothe the limbs after a day's walking.

Some group cooperation is required in this trek. Once we reach the cabins, fetching water, chopping wood, lighting the wood-burning stove, preparing dinner, and cleaning up, will all be part of the adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Kiruna, Sweden, and private minibus transfer to Abisko. Night in Abisko.

Day 2
This is the start of our adventure. We hike through Abisko National Park to Lake Abiskojaure. The cabin is situated on the south side of the lake. Distance 15 km.

Day 3
Today is the longest day of the trek. We start experiencing the vast open landscapes of Lapland, and the bare mountain regions. Up into the high mountains to the cabin at Lake Alesjaure. Sauna in the evening! Distance 22 km.

Day 4
Today’s leg is shorter. Distance 13 km to Tjäktja cabin.

Day 5
We cross over the Tjäktjapass at 1140 m. This is the highest point of the hike and from here the glacier-carved valley of Tjäktjavagge opens up. Some say Tjäktjavagge is Lapland's most majestic valley; others say that the views are prehistoric. Easy hiking all the way down to the cabin at Sälka. Sauna in the evening! Distance 12 km.

Day 6
To the cabins at Singi. Easy hiking down the valley of Tjäktjavagge. Lodging in dorms with either gas or wooden fire heating. Distance 13 km.

Day 7
To Kebnekaise Fjällstation. We enjoy mighty views all day. Sauna, showers and dinner at the restaurant in the evening! Distance 14 km.

Day 8
The last leg of the trek takes us down to Nikkaluokta. Along the way we admire the Kebnekaise range. Distance 19 km.

Day 9
Transfer to Kiruna airport and fly back to your home residence. No goodbyes, this has only been the beginning.
