Chamonix to Zermatt, Mont Blanc to Matterhorn. The Walker's High Level Route, or Haute Route, joins the two greatest mountaineering centers in the world - Chamonix and Zermatt - one overshadowed by the highest massif in Western Europe, and the other by the most famous, and probably the most elegant, of all alpine mountains. The truth is that Chamonix to Zermatt is the recipe for a visual feast.

Itinerary

Day 1
Rendezvous at the group chalet in Chamonix.

Day 2
After breakfast, we take a bus to Argentiere. We then start hiking to Aiguillete des Posettes (2201 m), enjoying wonderful views over Le Tour glacier, the Chamonix valley, and Mont Blanc. Soon we reach Col de Balme (2191 m), a mountain pass along the border of France and Switzerland.

Day 3
After our first night in Switzerland, we start the day ascending to 2040 m. We enjoy the views of the Swiss Alps while having our picnic. The wooden houses and the crystal clear lake make Champex a perfect place to end the day.

Day 4
Transfer to the vicinity of Verbier. A climb of 1636 m awaits us. Today we rest and sleep in one of the most famous huts in Switzerland.

Day 5
We wake up at dawn because today’s stage is the toughest of the trek. Not only will we reach the highest point but we will also climb two mountain passes at almost 3000 m. This is wild territory where we can spot ibexes.

Day 6
Today is full of surprises. We walk along Dix Lake; find edelweiss in the wild; walk over a Nepalese-like bridge; and view the Matterhorn for the first time, in the distance.

Day 7
Transfer to La Sage. From Col Torrent (2916 m) we enjoy the view over Lake Moiry. Tonight we sleep in Grimentz, one of the most spectacular and colorful villages in Switzerland.

Day 8
While walking through the Swiss Alps, we have plenty of time to enjoy and take pictures of the ever-white Weisshorn (4506 m) and Bishorn (4135 m).

Day 9
The Matterhorn is getting closer but for the moment we have to content ourselves with Dom (4479 m), Lenzspitze (4294 m) and Taschhorn (4490 m). We have a long descent, but for the last 828 m we take a cable car.

Day 10
Today’s start is one of the most exciting moments of the trek since we finally appreciate the Matterhorn in all its beauty. It accompanies us until we reach Zermatt. In this idyllic town we celebrate our success for completing the walker’s Haute Route.

Day 11
Today we take it easy. For those who would like to take advantage of what Zermatt has to offer, there are a multitude of hikes and cable cars on offer. In the afternoon we take the train back to Geneva.
