The Swiss say that the Tour of the Muverans must be done at least once in a lifetime; it's one of those things that you just have to do. But they keep this secret for themselves and hardly anyone outside Switzerland knows anything about this off-the-beaten-path trek. It is therefore rare to find a non-Swiss trekking in this part of the Alps.
DAY 1
Greeting at Geneva airport. From here we go to the Swiss Canton of Valais. This afternoon we have a 1h30 hike until we reach the mountain hut.
DAYS 2 & 3
From Bourg-St-Pierre to the Great St Bernard Pass
Hiking through the Muverans massif
We start our adventure in the Alps. On this first day of walking we take it easy and walk calmly for 4h30. On the third day we gain altitude, getting to 2,475 meters (8,356 feet) in the Forcla Pass, with incredible views of the Rhone Valley, and Bernese Alps. We sleep in a hut that is slightly higher than the pass.
DAY 3
From Switzerland to Italy
A few minutes' walk from the hospice, and we leave Switzerland to enter in Italy. Today’s hike is demanding: ahead of us we have three mountain passes at high altitude: 2450, 2800, and 2930 meters. It is the hardest stage of the entire route, but equally filled with spectacular and wild landscapes. We have clear views of the Italian and Swiss Alps, and we will see, in the distance, some four thousands peaks, such as the Great Paradiso and the Grand Combin. We have more spectacular views upon arrival at the refuge: in front of us, the Grandes Jorasses and the Mont Blanc reveal themselves.
DAYS 4 TO 6
Hiking through the Muverans and Nant Natural Reserve
Today we reach the Fenestral Pass. From here until the hut we maintain a high altitude, always above 2000 m. Walking through this natural balcony, we arrive to the refuge situated at 2400 m. The next day we have a challenging pass that, in case of bad weather, we will have to abandon to continue on another less dangerous path. Our hut is located in the middle of Nant Valley, in which 40% of Helvetic flora is concentrated. In front of us we have Plan Névé glacier, and the summit of Gran Muverans. Breakfast on the last day will be early in order to take advantage of the morning. In about 3h30 we reach the hut of the first day, thus completing the tour. From here we have an easy hike down to the valley.
